Ride: MTB & Quad and 4WD Trails >

The Blue Tier Descent is home to the Blue Dragon Event every year. More and more mountain bikers are heading to the Blue Tier and surrounding trails to sharpen their technical skills and enjoy the rolling free-riding that exists here.  Tours from all over Australia and even New Zealand have started arriving and what’s better than smashing down a local ale after smashing down the Blue Tier? 

Andrew Harrison for AMB Magazine wrote: Ultimately the second year of the Blue Dragon Challenge was a hearty showcase of the best riding in the northeast of Tasmania, over and across the spectacular Blue Tier.

Hike: Blue Tier and Local Walks >

What ever the weather, what ever your fitness level: After a long walk there is nothing better than enjoying some good old fashioned Tasmanian hospitality, local ales and a great feed.

From Buswalk.com:  "The Weldborough pub, one of Tasmania's most quaint country pubs stocking a massive collection of Tasmanian beers and serving a hot meal using very local produce... ... Of all the walking I've done in Tasmania I cannot think of many places where mid walk, you can get a pub meal, a beer, play some darts and meet up with other walkers and tourists."

Around Weldborough we have some nice short walks including:

  • Cemetery view
  • Valley view
  • State Forest and river walk loop

There are also some great bush walks including:

  • The Blue Tier descent (which ends at the hotel)
  • Blue Tier Giant and Groom river valley walk
  • Seven sisters tall trees
  • Waterfalls
  • Frome and Mt Paris Dam's
  • Weldborough Pass scenic reserve

Longer walks and managed trails can be found all over the region including:

  • The Blue Tier
  • Mt William
  • Bay of Fires (North)

Fossick: Pan the rivers for Gems >

The Weld River is not only known for its Tin, but for its gems!

You can hire equipment from the hotel and try your luck and is great fun for the whole family.  We've had a family from New Zealand stay and fossick over a weekend, regulars from Tasmania, Queensland and even as far as the North America.  

This area is a unique spot in TAS as is a great place for beginners and prospectors alike as there is a wide range of terrain and river areas to explore.

On the Road: Cycle and Motorbike >

The roads around these parts are made for riding.  Whether you are peddling on two wheels, scooting on three or powering through the turns on a motorbike, our roads are made for riding.  Now - there are some hills mind, so remember to stop and recharge at the Weldborough Hotel.

Wildlife: Birds and night spotting >

An avid birder stayed with us for a while up here, and within two weeks he had managed to take photos of 10 out of the 12 endemic species in Tasmania - all without using a car.   The bush around the Weldborough Hotel is accessible enough to use the hotel as a base, and explore the trails through the state forest and into the Blue Tier.

We have Platypus that frequents the Weld River and a family living in local dams. 

At night, grab a spotlight and see if you can find a Tassie Devil!  They are starting to make a comeback in our region.

 

Heritage: Mining, history and culture >

The Weldborough hotel, established in 1876 is an historic family run hotel in the middle of..WELL the middle of nowhere.   The Hotel was one of the only "licensed Asian hotels" in Tasmania and used to be known as the All Nations Hotel

The History of the Hotel and the surrounding area can be viewed on our walls (more and more as we find it).  The Hotel itself was rebuilt in 1886 and partially restored in 1927... but you'll have to pop in to learn more :)

Near by, you will find Mt Paris Dam which was built entirely by hand.  You can walk inside the dam and along the walls - there are some photos of it being built inside the Hotel.

Golf: Play the scenic Moorina Golf course >

Just down the road is a beautiful scenic golf course at Moorina.  For a short break, when time is limited - this course is perfect.

If you want to know more - just give us a ring or contact the golf course and mention you are staying up at the Weldborough Hotel.

Further down the hill - just the other side of St Helens is Cerise Brook with a great family friendly pitch and putt with reasonable rates, great coffee and fresh fruit.
